Italian Herbs and Cheese Sub Buns Recipe
It was Monday morning, the before school bustle in our small kitchen was real. Rhett was unloading the dishwasher, Piper was debating what to eat for breakfast, Lorelei was hugging me and Eden was doing her animal chores outside. I had started mixing up bread dough, so the Hum of the kitchen aid mixer was adding to the, shall we call it “Cozy winter home vibes?.” I was thinking subs sounded good for supper. Subway isn’t what it used to be and since we rarely eat out, I decided why not try to create subs using my bread recipe?. This was equal parts fun and terrifying. best case scenario? we have fabulous buns [not the kind that result from going to the gym] worst case scenario? We waste a recipe of bread dough!. I am thrilled to report the buns turned out absolutely fantastic!. Here is how I made them, the recipe is originally my own, and I would love to hear if you make it, and if you enjoy when I share recipes, or need any links? I am happy to share!. wishing you a fabulous day! -Hugs Grace
Bread Recipe:
4 cups of warm water
1TBSP salt
1/4 cup sugar
3 TBSP Butter softened
9 cups of Bread Flour
3 TBSP active dry yeast
I add all items to my kitchen aid mixer bowl in the order given. Then I mix for 5-8 minutes with my dough hook. Spray a large bowl with oil spray, add dough to bowl and cover with a warm damp cloth till it doubles in size.
Divide the dough into 16 equal balls. Shape each ball into a log shape. I placed 8 subs on each cookie sheet on parchment paper, evenly spaced.
Brush each roll with butter
In a bowl, mix:
1/2 cup cheddar cheese or your choice of cheese
3 TBSP Parmesan cheese
3 TBSP Italian seasoning
1tsp garlic powder
Sprinkle and press toppings onto each roll. Spray with Pam spray, cover and let rise again.
While rising, place a 9x13 glass pan on the bottom rack of your oven. Add 5 cups of water to it, turn oven to 350
Let oven get very hot, the water will ensure a soft middle to your buns!. Don't skip this part!.
Bake buns for 15 min or till brown the last 2 min, broil the buns to ensure a crust crumb.
Let cool before bagging up, enjoy them to the fullest! They also freeze well!.
The Buns, ready for their Second Rise.
Almost done, ready to broil for two minutes.
The perfect crumb top and bottom and the airiest center!
